One of the most iconic things you can see in a tour of Australia’s Red Centre is World Heritage listed Uluru. Whether you’re watching the sunset at dusk or rising early to see first light pour over the stunning desert landscape, there’s no escaping this place’s magic. Uluru is also deeply significant to the Anangu people, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the region, and taking a tour of the red centre will teach you things about this ancient culture you wouldn’t learn anywhere else. 40 kilometres west of Uluru is Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), which is another culturally significant geological formation in the region – 36 rock domes that have weathered for more than 500 million years.
You’ll also want to take a tour of Alice Springs, a town with a significant history as being established by early explorers who built a repeater station along the Overland Telegraph line in 1872 to relay messages from Darwin to Adelaide. There’s also Australia’s largest Aboriginal art gallery, Alice Springs Desert Park and camel rides into Palm Valley.
To the west of Alice Springs, you can take a tour of Kings Canyon, an enormous rock chasm 270 metres deep. Here you’ll be amazed by the wildlife that takes shelter from the harsh desert environment. Or alternatively, if you’ve got the energy, a guided climb around the canyon rim will give you incomparable views of Watarrka National Park.
Travel from Ayers Rock Resort to the Uluru sunset viewing area. Enjoy nibbles and a complimentary glass of wine as the sun sinks over the western horizon and the evening sky brings out the many shades of colour for which Uluru is famous. It is recommended that you photograph Uluru every 5 minutes to really capture the gradual colour changes of the rock.
Arriving in complete darkness, you will be able to enjoy the 50,000 globes of light in the desert, before making your way up the hill to the Field of Light sunrise viewing platform. Once at the platform, the AAT Kings team will be serving you tea, coffee or hot chocolate. You can enjoy your beverage as the sun starts to creep light throughout the sky and then watch in awe as it pops up in the distance behind Uluru, flooding the landscape, including Kata Tjuta behind you, with light.
Tour the sights of 'The Alice' including The School of the Air. Stop at the historic Telegraph Station, which marks the original site of the first European settlement in Alice Springs. Visit the Royal Flying Doctors Service, where you will see how medical aid reaches those who live in the remote 'outback' We also make a stop at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre. The tour concludes with a panoramic view of the township of Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges from the top of Anzac Hill.
First walk from Kuniya Piti, an Uluru sacred site and hear the Tjukurpa (Anangu – the local Aboriginal people - beliefs and law) story of the Mala Men. Next is the Mala Walk, one of the most important habitation areas for the local Aboriginal people over thousands of years. After a short rest break, continue on along the Lungkata Walk where your guide will tell you the Tjukurpa story of the cheeky Blue Tongue Lizard! Next stop is the Mutitjulu Waterhole.
Travel to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) where your Driver Guide will explain the geological history of the area. Watch the spectacular sunrise over Kata Tjuta with Uluru in the distance from the western dune viewing area, light breakfast included. Your Driver Guide will then escort you on a 2-3 hour walk to the Valley of the Winds lookout. Marvel at the unique flora and admire the view of the central valley of the domes of Kata Tjuta.
After sunset, an AAT Kings Guide will transfer you to the AAT Kings’ exclusive barbecue site. The site is within the Uluru National Park. The site is located far enough away from the resort lights to provide a clear view of the stars in the southern sky. Once at the site, you will enjoy a variety of Australian meats and salads, accompanied by a glass of wine, beer or orange juice (menus are subject to change). After dinner, tea, coffee and dessert will be served. Your guide will conduct a tour of the night sky, describing and pointing out some of the visible constellations with the assistance of a high beam spotlight.
Make the rocky climb to the rim of the canyon for marvellous views of Watarrka National Park. Follow the rim of the canyon stopping to look down into the canyon gorge at look-out points. Time permitting, you may choose to descend into the green oasis of the 'Garden of Eden'. The circuit walk takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is rocky and steep in parts.
