Touring the top end is an absolute must if you’re looking for a truly ‘Australian’ experience in the land down under. The region’s largest city, and capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin, is warm year-round and its tropical climate will lull you into relaxation no matter when you go.
The region also boasts a lot of history, right the way through from its involvement in World War II to the devastation caused by Cyclone Tracey. Visiting the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the Darwin Military Museum and the historic WWII bunkers in Charles Darwin National Park are all awesome ways to get the full experience. But if sightseeing is more your thing, why not take a day trip to Litchfield National Park and see the incredible termite mounds, rainforests and waterfalls – you can even go for a swim!
Along with dozens of other things, the top end also gives you the opportunity to tour World Heritage listed Kakadu, which is the largest national park in Australia and home to one third of Australia’s bird species and other wildlife. South of Darwin you could take a day to visit Katherine, the third largest town in the Northern Territory and a place that is fondly known as ‘where the outback meets the tropics’
